The core purpose of the NHS…….

According to Sir David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive, in the Foreword to The Operating Framework for the NHS in England 2011/12 “Our core purpose remains the delivery of improved quality for our patients, by improving safety, effectiveness and patient experience.”

The challenge for NHS boards, therefore, is to govern for better outcomes for patients. All provider organisations should be under no illusion that they exist so that the people they serve achieve the best health outcomes in the best possible way. Of course, organisations must comply with a myriad requirements from various sources along the way, but the primacy of patient outcome and experience must be acknowledged.
