There has been much media interest and publicity with the publication by Dr Foster of their 2010 Hospital Guide. Of particular media and public concern has been the apparently high levels of mortality, associated with Dr Foster’s hospital standardised mortality ratio (HSMR) figures, in 19 hospitals in England.
However, these is some good news in the latest guide, e.g.:
- Deaths in hospital continue to fall, dropping 7% between 2008/09 and 2009/10 in crude terms.
- The gap between the highest and lowest hospital standardised mortality ratios (HSMRs) has narrowed.
- Safety standards have improved, with higher rates of compliance with safety alerts and better reporting of errors.
